Rempotage, arrosage et taille des végétaux de la maison. Je suis sur la bonne voie de rescaper mes deux plants de basilic. A tous les ans, je m'en procure au moins un dans l'espoir d'avoir du basilic à profusion car j'adore cette fine herbe. Mais même en étant aux petits soins avec lui, il flétrit systématiquement en quelques jours et meurt. Après une recherche plus approfondie sur le web, j'ai trouvé que le basilic nécessite beaucoup énormément d'eau et que son terreau ne doit jamais devenir sec. Depuis que je refile à mes plants un petit verre d'eau à tous les jours, ils ont fière allure!

Watering, transplanting and trimming my house plants. I think I'm on the way to rescue both of my basil plants and I am so happy because basil is my favorite fine herb. Each year before, I tried to grow a basil plant that was, at first, pretty sturdy and healthy but it started to wither at the speed of light. Even if I placed the plant in bright sunlight and followed the care tips, I failed miserably. Thus this year, same thing, one of my basil plants started to look terrible. So I've done more research to know how to keep this fickle plant alive and found this basic, yet crucial tip : its soil just need to be moist at all times. So water is needed even before the soil starts to dry out. As for now, it seems to work well!

blackberry pie

Aujourd'hui je vous présente une petite recette tirée d'un bouquin vraiment super qui utilise des produits frais et non transformés comme ingrédients, en l’occurrence plusieurs fruits. J'en avais déjà parlé ici avec la délicieuse compote d'abricots et là j'ai trouvé une variante de tarte sans cuisson très intéressante avec une croûte de noix. Un excellent moyen, en plus, de goûter les mûres qui n'étaient vraiment pas chères cette semaine au supermarché. Voici donc simplement la traduction de la recette qui provient du livre SNOG healthy treats cookbook que l'on peut trouver notamment sur amazon.

croûte à tarte
350 g (2 tasses) d'amandes naturelles
1/8 c. à thé de sel de mer
1/2 c. à thé de quatre-épices (all spice) - pour ma part j'ai utilisé de la cannelle
85 g (1/3 tasse) de raisins secs
2 c. à table de nectar d'agave
1 c. à table d'extrait de vanille

préparation aux mûres
500 g (4 tasses) de mûres fraîches
environ 10 dattes dénoyautées
1 c. à table de nectar d'agave
1 c. à table de jus de citron fraîchement pressé

Pour préparer la croûte : broyer tout d'abord les amandes avec le sel et les épices au robot culinaire jusqu'à ce que les noix soient finement hachées. Ajouter les raisins secs, le nectar d'agave, l'extrait de vanille et 1 c. à table d'eau froide. Broyer à nouveau jusqu'à ce que le mélange s'agglomère légèrement. Étendre cette préparation dans un moule à tarte de 23-cm de diamètre, en prenant soin de recouvrir le fond d'une couche d'environ 8 mm d'épaisseur et les côtés jusqu'à la hauteur du moule. Si nécessaire, utiliser les mains pour compacter le tout et placer le moule au réfrigérateur pendant 20 minutes.

Pour la préparation aux mûres : toujours au robot culinaire, mettre 250 g (2 tasses) de mûres fraîches, les dattes, le nectar d'agave et le jus de citron. Broyer jusqu'à consistance lisse. Transférer cette préparation dans un bol et y ajouter les mûres restantes. Garnir la croûte à tarte du mélange de mûres et réfrigérer pendant deux heures. Cette tarte peut se conserver quatre jours au réfrigérateur dans un contenant hermétique.

Je dois dire que jusqu'à maintenant - et sans vouloir faire de la pub pour ce bouquin - j'ai beaucoup aimé les recettes que j'ai essayées. Le goût des fruits est bien présent et non pas dénaturé par l'ajout massif de sucre comme dans beaucoup de desserts aux fruits. La prochaine fois j'essaierai avec les framboises, mes baies préférées.

Today I'm sharing another recipe involving raw fruits and nuts from the SNOG healthy treats cookbook. I first wrote about this book here and its apricot compote and cashew crunch recipe which was delicious. So I decided to try another recipe this time, the blackberry pie, because these berries were at a good price this week at the supermarket.

pie crust
350 g (2 cups) raw almonds
1/8 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice - i used cinnamon
85 g (1/3 cup) raisins
2 tablespoons agave nectar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

filling
500 g (4 cups) fresh blackberries
around 10 dates, pitted
1 tablespoon agave nectar
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

For the pie crust : put the almonds, salt and allspice in the bowl of a food processor. Process until finely ground and loose. Add the raisins, agave nectar, vanilla and one tablespoon cold water and process until the mixture begins to stick together to form coarse crumbs. Put the mixture in a 23-cm (9-inch) diameter pie plate and distribute along the bottom and the sides to form an even layer. Press to compact with yout hands, shaping the crust flush with the rim. Chill in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

For the filling : put 250 g (2 cups) of the blackberries, the dates, agave nectar and lemon juice in the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl and stir in the remaining blackberries. Pour the filling into the pie crust and distribute evenly with a spatula. Refrigerate for 2 hours and then cut into slices. Stored in an airtight containter in the refrigerator, this pie will keep for four days.

I really liked the texture of this pie and especially the crunchy nut crust. Next time I'll use raspberries which are my favorite berries.

Ces trois dernières semaines ont été bien chargées (positivement) avec la venue de N. Il y a eu beaucoup de petits-déjeuners sur la terrasse avec le beau temps, des barbecues aussi le soir, des balades dans Québec, de jolies trouvailles (mes chaussures tigre!) et une petite escapade à Montréal. Depuis son départ j'ai occupé la fin de mon long weekend - c'était férié ici - en plantant pleins de fleurs et des cactus, et en écoutant le tout nouvel album de Phoenix, Bankrupt!, dont je suis littéralement fan.

The past three weeks have been pretty fun because N came from France. We had a lot of sunny breakfasts on the terrace and some night BBQ partys too. We did some walks to the old town where we bought a couple of things - my tiger shoes! - and we ended N's vacations with a 2-days trip in Montreal just before his flight. It was a long week-end here in Canada so I came back home alone and kept myself busy with my flowers and cactus and the new album of Phoenix, Bankrupt!.

brownie bites

Mon four m'a lâché il y a plus de deux semaines et nous sommes toujours en attente de la pièce et du réparateur. Donc pour satisfaire mon envie de dessert au chocolat, je n'avais d'autre choix que de me rabattre sur un dessert qui peut se cuire dans un petit four grille-pain. Et de là l'idée des brownies. La recette utilisée est celle prise sur le site de Ricardo. J'ai seulement utilisé des pépites de chocolat mi-sucré au lieu du chocolat noir et du beurre demi-sel qui apporte un petit goût plus salé très intéressant. Délicieux!

I was craving for chocolate desserts recently, thinking about chocolate cupcakes with frosting on top or a layer cake. But the thermostat of my oven died about two weeks ago and we are still waiting for the oven-guy to come and fix the problem. So I decided to use my toaster oven but there was not enough space for a 12-muffins pan in it so I made brownies instead. And these bites totally satisfied my sweet tooth. (I took the recipe from the Ricardo website and just translated it here)

brownie bites
150 g semi-sweet (or dark) chocolate, chopped
3/4 cup unsalted butter, cut into chunks
2 eggs
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 350F. Line the bottom of an 8 inch square pan with parchment paper and leave an overhang on two opposite sides. Grease the two remaining sides with butter.

In a double boiler, melt chocolate and butter and mix until smooth. Set aside. In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, brown sugar, white sugar and salt with a fork or a balloon whisk. Add the chocolate mixture and the flour and stir together well.

Pour the brownie mix in the prepared pan and place in the oven for 25-30 minutes. Be careful to not overcook them - a toothpick inserted in the center of the pan should not come out all clean. Once the brownies are done, allow to cool in the pan about two hours. Then carefully transfer to a chopping board and cut into chunky squares.
